What Is the WhatsApp Business API?
A plain-English guide to Meta's official API for business messaging: what it does, how to get access in India and what it costs.
The WhatsApp Business API (now Meta's WhatsApp Cloud API) is the official way for a business to send and receive WhatsApp messages through software instead of a phone. It lets a team share one number, automate replies with chatbots and AI, send approved template messages at scale, and connect WhatsApp to a CRM. Meta charges per template message. BizBotify is a WhatsApp Business API platform for Indian businesses: you connect your number in about 30 minutes through Meta's Embedded Signup, pay Meta's rates with 0% markup, and get a shared inbox, automation and a built-in Sales CRM from ₹1,499/month, billed annually.
WhatsApp Business app vs WhatsApp Business API
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business API | |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses it | One owner on a phone, plus linked devices | Any number of agents through a platform like BizBotify |
| Automation | Greeting, away message and quick replies | Chatbots, AI replies, keyword rules, follow-up sequences, workflows |
| Bulk messaging | Broadcast lists, only to people who saved your number | Approved template campaigns to opted-in contacts, with delivery and read tracking |
| Integrations | None | CRM, website forms, e-commerce and your own systems through an API |
| Cost | Free | Meta per-message fees plus the platform subscription |
How to get WhatsApp Business API access
There are two routes. You can build directly on Meta's Cloud API, which needs a Meta developer account, a business app and a system-user token, so it suits companies with their own engineering team. Most businesses instead connect through a Meta partner platform, which uses Meta's Embedded Signup so you never touch developer settings.
What you need
- A Meta Business portfolio (formerly Business Manager). Business verification is recommended because it raises your limits.
- A phone number you own that can receive an SMS or voice call. A number on the WhatsApp Business app can stay there through Meta's coexistence option; a number on the regular WhatsApp app has to be removed from it first.
- A display name that matches your business. Meta reviews it; you can start messaging before approval.
- A payment method on your WhatsApp account for Meta's message fees.
Connecting through BizBotify
- Start a free trial (15 days, no credit card).
- Click Connect WhatsApp and log in with Facebook. Meta's Embedded Signup creates or selects your WhatsApp Business account and verifies your number.
- Add a payment method in Meta for message fees. Meta bills your WhatsApp account directly, so BizBotify adds no markup.
- Invite your team and switch on welcome messages, AI replies or a chatbot. See the step-by-step setup guide.
Messaging limits
Meta limits how many unique people you can start conversations with in a rolling 24 hours using template messages. The limit is set per business portfolio and shared across all its numbers. Replies to customers who message you first do not count.
| Tier | How you reach it |
|---|---|
| 250 | Every new business portfolio starts here |
| 2,000 | Complete business verification, or send 2,000 high-quality template messages to unique people within 30 days |
| 10,000 → 100,000 → Unlimited | Raised automatically when message quality is good and you use at least half your current limit over 7 days |

Frequently asked questions
Is the WhatsApp Business API free?
No. Access through Meta is free to set up, but Meta charges per template message (marketing, utility, authentication) and, since 1 October 2026, for service replies beyond 1,000 free per number each month. Platforms like BizBotify charge a subscription for the inbox, automation and CRM on top.
What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business API and the Cloud API?
The Cloud API is the current, Meta-hosted version of the WhatsApp Business API. Meta retired the older self-hosted On-Premises API, so "WhatsApp Business API" today effectively means the Cloud API.
Can I use the same number on the WhatsApp Business app and the API?
Yes, with Meta's coexistence option, which BizBotify supports. Choose Use my existing WhatsApp Business app number when you connect: the app keeps working on your phone and chats sync both ways. Trade-offs include a 20 messages-per-second sending cap and no group-chat sync; see the setup guide.
How long does it take to get WhatsApp Business API access?
With BizBotify, connecting a number usually takes 15–30 minutes. Business verification in Meta can take longer, but you can start messaging at the starting limit while it is reviewed.
Do I need a developer to use the WhatsApp Business API?
Not with a platform. BizBotify handles the API connection, templates, webhooks and security; your team works in a web inbox and a no-code automation builder.
Is BizBotify an official WhatsApp Business API provider?
Yes. BizBotify is a Meta Tech Provider and connects numbers through Meta's official Cloud API and Embedded Signup, not unofficial phone-automation tools.
