WhatsApp Message Errors Explained

Sometimes a chat shows a warning instead of a message, or a message you sent says it failed. These errors come from WhatsApp (Meta), not from BizBotify. This page explains each one in plain words and tells you what you can do.

block below into the right group ("received" = customer's message to you, "sent" = your message to them). 2. Set id="error-". Keep the "error-" prefix: an id that starts with a digit breaks the app's scroll-to-anchor. 3. Add a matching chip to the .toc list above. 4. Fill in: what the business sees, what it means, what to do, Meta links. Write for a shop owner, not a developer (docs/help-content-guide.md). 5. Update the lastmod date for this page in public/sitemap.xml. -->

Messages from your customers

You see these in the Inbox where the customer's message should be, marked Unsupported message. WhatsApp told us a message arrived, but it did not send us what was in it. Click What does this mean? under it to jump straight to the right answer below.

The customer sent a kind of message WhatsApp can't pass on

In the chat you see: Message type is currently not supported.

What it means

The customer sent something that works in the WhatsApp app but that WhatsApp does not share with business software like BizBotify. WhatsApp sends us only a note saying "a message arrived", with nothing inside it. Nobody can read that message through BizBotify. This is not a BizBotify fault, and every WhatsApp business tool behaves the same way.

This usually happens with things like:

  • a poll
  • a "view once" photo or video
  • an event invite
  • an edited message
  • a one-time password (OTP) message forwarded from another business
What you can do

Reply and ask the customer to send it again as normal text, a photo, or a document. If your number is also on the WhatsApp Business app, you may be able to see it there.

WhatsApp kept the message on your phone only

In the chat you see: WhatsApp didn't share this message with BizBotify. Check the WhatsApp Business app on your phone to read it.

What it means

This only happens if your number works in both the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and BizBotify. WhatsApp delivered the message to your phone but did not share a copy with BizBotify. It happens most often when:

  • the customer is messaging you for the first time, for example straight after tapping your Facebook or Instagram ad, or
  • the customer is using WhatsApp on a device WhatsApp doesn't support for this, such as WhatsApp for Windows or a smartwatch.
What you can do

Open the WhatsApp Business app on your phone to read the message. Their next messages normally come through to BizBotify as usual, and you can reply from BizBotify.

Messages you sent

The message you or your campaign sent shows a red mark, with a red note under it saying why. The customer did not get the message. Click What does this mean? in the note to jump straight to the right answer below.

WhatsApp held back a marketing message

The red note under the message says Meta limited marketing messages to this contact to protect their experience. or, in WhatsApp's own words, This message was not delivered to maintain healthy ecosystem engagement.

What it means

WhatsApp limits how many marketing messages one person gets from all businesses combined. The limit changes based on how much that person has been reading and replying to such messages lately. If they have had enough recently, WhatsApp quietly holds yours back. It doesn't mean your number is in trouble.

What you can do
  • Wait at least 24 hours before sending to that person again. Sending again straight away will fail the same way.
  • If they message you first, you can reply freely for 24 hours, and those replies are not limited.
  • This limit is only for marketing. Utility templates, like order updates and reminders, are not held back by it.
  • Send fewer, more useful offers. Messages people read and reply to are held back less.

The message could not reach this number

The red note under the message says WhatsApp could not deliver to this number. or, in WhatsApp's own words, Message undeliverable

What it means

WhatsApp could not deliver to this person. The usual reasons:

  • the number is not on WhatsApp, or is typed wrong (check the country code, e.g. +91)
  • their WhatsApp app is very old
  • they have not accepted WhatsApp's latest terms
What you can do

Check the number in Contacts. If it looks right, ask the customer by call or SMS to update WhatsApp and open it once. Then send again.

More than 24 hours since the customer last messaged

The red note under the message says This contact can only be reached with a template right now. or, in WhatsApp's own words, Re-engagement message

What it means

WhatsApp lets you send normal messages only for 24 hours after the customer's last message. After that, you can only send a WhatsApp-approved template.

What you can do

Send a template instead. When the customer replies, the 24 hours start again and you can chat normally.

This customer is in a WhatsApp test group

The red note under the message says User's number is part of an experiment

What it means

WhatsApp is running a test where a very small number of people get no marketing messages at all. This customer is one of them. You are not charged for this message.

What you can do

Nothing on your side will fix it. If the message matters, reach the customer another way and ask them to message you on WhatsApp. Once they do, you can reply for 24 hours.

The customer turned off your marketing messages

The red note under the message says This contact has opted out of marketing messages. or, in WhatsApp's own words, Unable to deliver the message. This recipient has chosen to stop receiving marketing messages…

What it means

The customer told WhatsApp they don't want marketing messages from your business. Order updates, reminders and replies to their messages can still reach them.

What you can do

Don't send marketing to them again, because it will keep failing. Leave them out of your next campaign. They can turn marketing messages back on in WhatsApp themselves.

A problem with your WhatsApp payment method

The red note under the message says Business eligibility payment issue

What it means

Meta charges for some WhatsApp messages, and it could not bill your account. The usual reasons: no card added, the card failed or expired, or your credit limit was reached. Until this is fixed, paid messages such as templates and campaigns will fail.

What you can do

Open Meta Business Settings → WhatsApp accounts → Payment settings and add or update your payment method. Then send again. If you're not sure, contact BizBotify support and we'll help.

The template's blanks didn't match what was sent

The red note under the message says This template expects a different number of variables than we sent. with WhatsApp's own words in smaller text underneath: Number of parameters does not match the expected number of params

What it means

Templates have blanks that get filled in for each customer, like their name. WhatsApp expected a different number of values than it got. This usually happens when someone changed the template (added or removed a blank) after the message or campaign was set up.

What you can do

Click Edit & resend under the failed message. It reopens the template as it is now, so you can fill in every blank. For a campaign, pick the template again and check every blank has a value.
